- I just sent in my $50 to register VTSOCKET. Although the implementation of
- VBWSK is nice, it doesn't work properly on my system. (I'm running Novell
- LAN WorkPlace for DOS.) The basic problem is that the "Accept" event is
- generated when an incoming connection is attempted, but when you tell it to
- connect it doesn't! I think this problem is probably native to the
- combination of VBWSK and Lan WorkPlace, with the error probably being in
- VBWSK. I've never had any other problems with WinSock stuff, and VTSOCKET
- works fine.
-
- Remember, though, VBWSK is still in alpha testing. Perhaps the 1.0 relase
- will solve this problem.

- Subject: -=[Wussy sort of TCP/IP question]=-
-
- Someone tell me if this is right.
-
- I have a network packet driver under DOS which is allowing my computer to
- communicate with my network card. When WinSock runs under Windows it creates a
- TCP/IP stack which allows programs to communciate via TCP protocol to the
- packet driver. Is this all WinSock is doing? or is there a bit more to it?
-
- Also can I get a TCP/IP stack to run under DOS? Would this be a replacement
- for WinSock if I ran the TCP/IP stack under DOS and used some modified version
- of winpkt.com to allow the virtual machine handling for the DOS stack? Would
- this allow DOS programs to communicate via TCP/IP if they do not contain their
- own stack (NCSA has its own but I want to use something diff.)?
-
- Dont flame me if I've got this all wrong. Im just a tad confused at this point
- and would welcome any advice.

- It can be used only with WFW 3.11. It is an NDIS 3.0 compliant protocol

- Perhaps nothing, perhaps less (e.g. WS_PING doesn't work with it).
- Trumpet Winsock seems excellent, mature, and well supported. The main
- interest, in my personal opinion, in the VxD implementation is the
- 32-bit protected mode operation, i.e. NO "real mode" (DOS) drivers
- load. This frees up low memory (the 640k etc. of DOS), this is the
- area Windows uses for resource management, running out of space here
- is the main reason you see an "Out of Memory" error even though you
- have 16Mb RAM and only 2Mb of programs loaded. The VxD consumes NO low
- memory, only loading in Windows when an app calls it, and then only
- consuming about 59k of memory (2/3 of which is discardable) - compared
- with >600k of memory for a calling app like Mosaic. The other benefit
- is potentially faster and more reliable operation. And of course, there's
- the future... once we're in Chicago (Windows 4.0) and beyond there won't
- be a DOS to load the real mode packet drivers in - it'll all be 32-bit
- protected mode VxD's. All in all, though if it ain't broke, don't fix
- it! If you like what you've got, enjoy!
-
- Personally, I long for Valhala (it just past Chicago):
-
- TelNet - just a selection in the Terminal program, TCP/IP right after Com4:
- FTP - just a selection button in File Manager's Connect Net Drive...
- FTPd - just a selection button in File Manager's Share As...
- e-mail - I just enter the SMTP addresses in MS Mail's personal address
- book; my mailing lists include mixes of internet, fax, an WFW
- lpr/lpd - Print Manager takes care of it all
- talk - when my WFW Chat phone rings it might be internet from Australia
-
- Yeah, OK, I'm a dreamer... but it is conceivable that all rudimentary stuff
- COULD be included in Chicago with the integration of the VxD winsock, and
- we could have Windows for World Wide Workgroups (WFWWW)... and maybe
- we'll only pay less than $100.00 for the upgrade. Programmers could pursue
- "fun" stuff like Mosaic and Cello and Trumpet. Imagine DDE on the internet:
- a system manager in DesMoines changes and IP address and an FTP site list
- on archie.au automatically updates before the users' eyes in Mosaic.
-
- Doug "If you're going to dream, dream BIG!"
- jones@cbdb1.nimh.nih.gov
- Clearly, ALL these opinions and conjectures are my own.
- (Valhala?!? Be real, who else would claim THAT!)
-
- P.S. I'm forwarding a copy to wolvrine@microsoft.com. Hope the hot-shots
- in Redmond forgive me for any misinformation or misconceptions on my part:
